Winter Open 2008

21 November to 20 December

Over a hundred works were submitted for the Winter Open in Oriel Q and the various media, styles and sizes made it a difficult selection.

The show stealer is a stunning installation by Charaka Danaher (recently graduated with a BA from West Wales School of Art) consisting of porcelain balls suspended from the ceiling and reflected in a mirrored plinth, which emanated light through more balls on its surface. This work is based on ‘family constellations’ by Bert Hellinger and is a moving spiritual piece which creates a sense of wonder and admiration.

It is a lovely contrast to the vibrant exciting paintings in the rest of the gallery, which vary from large abstract textured works, by Tricia McParlin, Sarah Ball, Annabel König and Tim Fudge, to depictions of stormy seas by Alison Fowler and Rachel Flux, and watercolours by Osi Rhys Osmond, prints by Sue Kelsall and lively still life compilations by Pauline Latham and Kay Parsons. There are sculptures by Natalia Dias, Geoff Hockley, Martin White and Debbie Lewis, and a fabulous collection of jewellery made from textiles and beads by Diana Durey.

The photographs on the stairs are high quality black and white images by Audrey Searle, Wendy and Gill Finucane and Rachel Davies, and there are yet more delightful images to suit all tastes and pockets.

Below are pieces by: Neil Crowther, Martin White, Deborah Lewis, Tim Fudge, Geoff Hockley, Annabel König, David Fitzjohn, Rachel Flux and Pauline Latham.

On Saturday 20 December at 3.00pm, there will be a raffle of 30 small paintings done by well-established artists, which are on display in Oriel Fach, to raise funds for the gallery. You can get your tickets (only £2 each, £10 per book) from the gallery office, or telephone 01834 869454 if you would like to receive a book.

Better still, come and see for yourself what an excellent exhibition this is. It is open from Wednesday to Saturday 10.00am to 5.00pm.
