Images and Reflections

8 to 29 September 2007

This exhibition shows work by 28 members of the Pembrokeshire branch of the Embroiderers' Guild, each following their own design ideas on a variety of backgrounds, from paper and fibres to the more traditional fabrics and materials.

Forget the image of little old ladies making pretty corners on tablecloths. Textiles and surface pattern is a popular department in the modern art college, and quite a few of the guild members have been students recently, and bring an exciting dimension to the work of the group.

A stunning portrait Stop and Smell the Roses (78 x130 cm) by the renowned Audrey Walker MBE was made using thousand of stitches, thereby creating subtle shadows and tones.

Witty pieces by Eirian Short, a poignant work by Rozanne Hawksley, subtle felting by Judith Colley, well-researched and highly skilled pieces by Glesni Williams, and a collection of delicate beautiful work by Christine Benson are some of the delights on show.

Kathleen Hancox, Hilary Langston, Ann Burt, Sheila Bowles. Elinor MacPhee, Nancy Warlow, Diane Jones, Anne Sequeira, Sarah Reason Jones, Laura Price, Shirley Grundy, Anne Embrey and Jean Hance Williams are some of the other talented members contributing and, with 97 exhibits well displayed, it is an exhibition to delight and educate the professionals and amateurs.

The aim of the Guild, a registered charity, is to promote and encourage the art of embroidery, to educate the public in the history of the art of embroidery in all forms, and to collect, document, preserve and exhibit examples of fine embroidery and make them available to the public. The Pembrokeshire branch of the Embroiderers' Guild extend their knowledge of materials through workshops and experimentation, pushing boundaries and techniques to achieve exciting results but also working with traditional skills.
