This body of work has been about an investigation into materials, colour and composition. I wanted to use items not obviously intended for the production of paintings. These included rope, straw, cement and sand mainly. I was interested in encouraging a methodical approach to the work, where I would set up four or five surfaces at a time and work through each one, allowing myself only 30 minutes on each image – to prevent overworking, and to stop me becoming precious about any part of the works.
